This guide is informational and may not fit every setup. We do not provide third‑party support services. Always back up configuration files and test changes in small steps.
Start from a clean baseline
Before adding anything, make sure your baseline is predictable. Stability comes from consistency.
- Use a clean install and launch the game once before modding.
- Keep a backup of the original configuration files (so you can revert quickly).
- Disable overlays or background tools if you’re diagnosing performance issues.
Pick a single “source of truth” for installs
Whether you use a mod manager or a manual approach, avoid mixing multiple methods randomly.
- Prefer one mod manager workflow for most installs.
- When you must install manually, document what you changed.
- Avoid “mystery files”: if you don’t know what it is, remove it.
Install in layers (and test each layer)
Install in small batches so you can identify what caused a problem.
- Core stability fixes: essentials first.
- UI & quality-of-life: menus, controls, convenience.
- Visual changes: textures, lighting, weather.
- Gameplay and content: bigger changes last.
After each layer, launch and do a short test run. If it breaks, roll back that layer instead of guessing.
Keep a mod journal
Write down what you changed. It’s boring for 20 seconds, and priceless later.
- Mod name + version
- Where you got it (link or archive)
- Any settings you changed
- Date installed
If you ever need to rebuild, this journal becomes your blueprint.
A minimal test routine
Use a consistent test routine so your results mean something.
- New game or a clean test save (avoid a heavily modded “main” save for testing).
- Check the same locations and actions (menus, inventory, combat, a short travel route).
- Watch for stutters, missing textures, or odd script behavior.
Rollback strategy
Plan for mistakes. Stable setups are built by people who can undo changes quickly.
- Back up config files and mod manager profiles.
- Change one thing at a time when diagnosing an issue.
- If a change improves stability, write it down.
